Smart Sights

Archery sight marks from watch, tape, card or phone.

Calculation Method

Smart Sights uses a physics model to predict arrow flight and calculate marks using initial arrow velocity, bow orientation to horizontal and drag coefficient. The app performs a search for parameters best fitting the data. This takes about a minute to execute, but the app can provide marks as soon as an initial fit is calculated, after a few seconds. The computed marks are shown in the Setup Marks screen in the Calc column.

These should be close to the actual mark as measured but are not expected to be exactly the same. If there is a large discrepancy the mark should be checked and reshot. Smart Sights will adjust the computed mark using the discrepancies from the actual marks at specific distances and interpolate in between, so that it will deliver marks very closely matching actual shooting.

Smart Sights uses the peg distance, archers height, standard target height, and distance archer stands behind the peg to compute estimate shooting distance and angle from the bow. Alternatively a distance and angle can be input directly. (Distance behind peg can be set to zero if standing astride the peg.)

Setting up Marks

Smart Sight requires data about the bow, the arrows and yourself. The data needed is height of your eye, height of a normal target, distance from eye to arrow nock at full draw, distance from eye to sight pin at full draw, arrow length, arrow diameter, arrow weight and the size of a division on the sights, and the distance behind the peg that you stand.

At least 2 reference sight marks must be input, more can be added to make the calculations more accurate. Smart Sights will work best when you enter reference marks at the shortest and longest distances you intend to shoot, when you take care to ensure the reference marks entered are accurate, and when you add additional marks as needed to adjust for errors arising from the calculation model necessary approximations or shooting form at particular distances.

If the ground to a target is approximately flat it is not necessary to enter an angle as the mark with default angle will be accurate enough.
